Welcome to 2012, a year I was so excited to embrace that I overwhelmed myself with goals and changes and here it is, 25 days in, and I realize I haven’t managed to post a blog in ANY of my public blogs (and only once in my private blogs,) and this is my official apology to myself and to all the wonderful blog readers out there who would have been inspired, educated, or at the very least entertained by my thoughts.

Today I want to talk to you about how to get the most out of psychic readings.

I have been a professional psychic for nearly a decade, and practiced divination for nearly two.  I have had dozens of readings and performed thousands.  And yet, I do not know everything there is to know about the world of psychics.

My aura pic from 2007 (I thought it'd make a cute psychic picture 🙂

For one thing, I have never come across the psychic con artist, who tries to convince you that you are cursed and for a few hundred dollars every week for the rest of your life they can remove the curse for you.  In fact, when I first heard about crap like that happening from friends who have dealt with these creeps, at first I was shocked.  Then, I was angry.  I consider what I do to be a sacred act, and the idea of someone abusing it infuriates me.

Psychic Con Artists may actually have psychic gifts, but who cares if they are trying to con you out of house and home?  So for the purposes of this post, we’ll consider them fake psychics.  Fake psychics also include those who ask leading questions, fishing for information that they then present to you as a psychic revelation.  A real psychic might ask questions for clarification; a fake psychic asks more questions than they answer.  Fake psychics may also say incredibly vague statements that could apply to anyone for the entire reading, whereas a real psychic may shock you with specifics.

Real psychics come in as many different flavors as any other profession.  It’s perhaps more productive to talk about psychics in terms of their readig style.  Here are the three main real psychic styles with which I am most familiar:

Me as a Fortuneteller for Halloween 2004

Fortune Tellers – psychics who specialize in predictive readings, who will tell you when you’ll meet your soulmate, whether you’ll have kids, how awesome your future career will be, etc.  Crystal ball readers, palm readers, and many card readers are often predictive psychics.  I consider fortunetelling to be a fun thing to play with, but not my primary gift.  Don’t ask me winning lotto numbers – I’ve always sucked at math. 😉

John Edward, Medium and really entertaining to watch 🙂

Mediums – psychics who specialize in connecting with departed loved ones.  They receive messages and pass them on to their living clients.  Sometimes they see the beings, sometimes they feel them, or hear them, or receive visual messages, or all of the above.    I am a medium, but it is a secondary gift, and usually not the focus of my readings except in special cases.  There are also such things as channelers – people who allow non-corporeal entities to inhabit their bodies and both speak and move.  That is something I do not do, and at this point, the very idea freaks me out. 🙂

Diviners – psychics who specialize in connecting with divine energy, such as deities, spirit guides, angels, totems, or the collective unconscious, to help their clients heal, grow, and solve problems.  I consider myself primarily a Diviner.  And we generally just call ourselves psychics, in case you were wondering why you’ve never heard of a Psychic Diviner.

I’ve shared all of this with you, because you may feel drawn more to one category than the other two.  For example, if you really want to talk to your departed grandma, you’d want to talk to a medium.  If you are just out for a good time, find a fortune teller.

If you’re new to all this and want to see what floats your boat, try one or two of each! (Except con artists, of course.)

And once you sit down with your psychic, either in person or on the phone, listen to your gut.  Do you feel comfortable with this person, or anxious?  If you feel anxious, walk away (or hang up.)

9 Swords from the Fey Tarot

When you are ready, and you meet the right psychic, you should feel comfortable with him or her, maybe excited or even a bit nervous.  What’s the difference between nervous and anxious?  Nervous is how you feel before a job interview; anxious is how you feel when you are swimming in deep water at the beach and  something underneath the water bumps into you and you have the Jaws theme playing in your head.

It is important to trust your psychic if you are getting a reading for anything more than entertainment.  Getting a reading is a very intimate act, even if it’s over the phone on a radio station.  I give mini readings on an internet radio station every week, and I can tell you that it does get very personal.  I joked with my friend, who runs the show, that we are like the Paranormal Delilahs.

The phrasing of your question affects the quality of your reading.  Some important points to remember are:

  • Avoid yes/no questions.  How/why/what questions are much more useful.  Instead of “is my marriage going to survive,” try “what can I do to help my marriage survive,” “why is my marriage on the rocks,” “what can I do to expedite my divorce,” or even, “would it be better to try to make my marriage work, or to file for divorce?”
  • If you want to hear about something specific, ask about it.  A lot of clients say they just want to hear whatever comes up.  That’s fine if it’s true, but if you find yourself asking about things your reading did not address, then you might consider thinking about  what you really want out of your reading for a few minutes before you sit down with your psychic.
  • Avoid “leading” questions.  You don’t need to lead your psychic towards the answer you want to hear.  It won’t work on an experienced reader, for one, and it might upset you if you don’t hear what you want to.

Even more important than phrasing your question is receiving your answer.  If you go to a psychic open to hearing the messages that are meant for you, you will get much more out of your reading than if you go with skepticism.

It’s okay to know what answer you expect as long as you are open to hearing a different answer.  A reading can give you a perspective that you never considered, or it can tell you exactly what you already know, but still help because hearing it from a stranger validates your decision and wisdom.

Six months ago, if you have told me that by the end of 2011, I would be putting together an intensive intuitive tarot weekend retreat, I would have smiled and nodded while backing away slowly.

But I’ve done it.

The first weekend of December, the weekend after Thanksgiving, I will be teaching people how to read tarot without a book.  I am so excited to take everything I know about teaching, healing, writing, and divination, and mold it into seven intensive classes (and two rituals, plus two parties!)

This is seriously a dream come true…I can’t wait!

I’m even going to be making all the delicious, nutritious food and desserts for the retreat, for everyone who orders the optional meal plan!  I’m just as excited to share my food as I am to share my knowledge!

You can see the details (and pre-register! EEEEEE!) here: http://healingtoday.com/tarot_weekend.htm

And for my new subscribers, I just want to let you know that I’ll be posting new blogs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, usually in the morning.  This Wednesday I’ll be posting about Moon Signs and how knowing yours can help you heal emotionally, as well as give insight into your relationships.  Friday I will be posting about the true value of money.

Blessings of love, light, and dreams come true! ❤

7 May 2011

Saturday is the biggest, busiest day at FPG.  There is always tons going on, lots of shopping between rushing off to workshops, concerts, main ritual, and the drummers drum well into Sunday morning.

My FPG Saturday started in the quiet hours of dawn.  I missed my baby so much.  Beth rolled her eyes every time I said it, as I said it at least twenty times aloud per day.  I just love waking up with my toddler sleeping angelically beside me, and when he opens his eyes and sees me looking at him and just smiles so happily.

OH how I missed my baby at FPG.

But I started my Saturday walking down vendor’s row, browsing other people’s wares, waiting for the palm reader to get back to her booth.  All she was doing was palm readings, for $18, and I was intrigued.

A little background on me…I’ve been studying divination in all it’s forms, especially astrology, palmistry, runes, and tarot, for close to two decades.  I’ve met many talented diviners, but I can only think of a handful who have simply blown me away with their detail, accuracy, and sheer “how did they get that from THAT?!”-ness.

This palm reader totally blew me away. She looked at my palms for about ten seconds, and told me I had a BA in Anthropology.

HOW THE HECK?!

So I just sat there with my jaw gaping and my eyes bugging, reliving my childhood as she told me about my relationship with each of my parents, my love life and sexual preferences, my depression issues and addictive behaviors (smoking, which I quit when I was pregnant, and sugar, she was that specific!)  She told me that I was very sensitive to violence, both physical and emotional, and that I tended to collect strays, both the pet kind and the friend kind.  So, basically, she looked at my hands an proceeded to tell me the story of my life.

Then we moved into my future.  4 kids, 5 years apart, she said.  So I should be pregnant with number two in 2013 then?  Lol  I’m hoping they are 4 years apart, possibly 3…not sure if I want to have my last baby at 42, though I have friends who have.  She talked about my writing, and my ability to collect information and synthesize it to help people think in new ways, and said I’d be travelling a lot, founding communities that help people, especially families, elders, and communes.  She called me a defender of the week, and stressed that I’m here to help a LOT of people, and told me to get busy…lol

So…that was amazing, and set the tone for the rest of a busy, incredible day.

I gave SO many readings that Saturday, awkward ones for exes, fun ones for teens, interconnected ones for family members.  I traded my neighbor a reading for another Reiki massage, for the second best trade ever.  When she rubbed my neck and shoulders, I felt like she popped a balloon of tension, and a ton of blocked energy just whooshed out in a heated blast that even she felt.  A bee stung my left ankle during that massage, and later I figured it was a message to get my butt in gear and put my best foot forward regarding my thesis and all the ecourses I’ve been wanting to teach forever.

After my massage, I showed my masseuse friend my driver’s license, so she could see me with blonde hair, my natural color (It’s short and red now.)  She looked at it, and back and me, and shook her head, saying, “That’s not you.  That looks nothing like you.  That woman is miserable and drowning in darkness, and you radiate joy and light!”

I thanked her for the healing and the compliment, and studied my license at my own booth.  She was write…even though the picture was only a year old, it didn’t look like me.  I felt sad for the self that I was, but happy that I’ve changed so much.  J

Even though I registered for FPG too late to submit the workshops I usually teach, the Red Tent let me do the Incredible Vagina workshop there, which was very well attended for something last minute and word of mouth!  I always love doing that workshop, but next festival I want it to be co-ed – guys need to know this stuff too!

The Incredible Vagina

Main Ritual was awesome for the energy it raised – the audience clapping and chanting and cheering, Kirk White performing in his role as Arch Druid, Phaedra Bonewits making us cry as she honored her late husband, Gina LaMonte singing, the faeries and children dancing and laughing, and the amazing spiral dancing – hundreds of us, all ages, whirling and pulling each other along so fast it was like a human chain imitating the dueling dragon’s roller coaster, with all the twists and turns and near misses!

The group that put on main ritual 🙂

I was too tired for the drum circle, so I packed my singing bowls, and missed my baby even more before I finally drifted into well-earned sleep.

5 May 2011

I dragged myself to the shower around nine, then got some coffee and set up my healing and reading area.  Here are my precious singing bowls:

I love catching up with festival friends!  People remember me from being vending neighbors, from playing with my son at previous festivals, from attending my workshops (The Incredible Vagina and Healing with Crystal Singing Bowls), or from getting readings with me.  Thankfully I remember most of them too!

My friend Crystal brought me two tarot virgins – a young teen boy, older teen girl.  I met Crystal at my very, VERY first workshop I ever led – my first singing bowl workshop, under the huge tree down by the lake.  Thank goodness for facebook, so we can keep up with each other the other 356 days of the year!

I demonstrated how to play my bowls for several kids, and when my vending neighbor showed an interest, I offered to trade a bowl session from me for a Reiki massage session from her.  She took me up on it, and it was GOOD…lol

I didn’t mean to spend any money today, but there was a stone vendor right across from me, and I couldn’t help myself.  I found a gorgeous tektite that wanted me, with a bulbous part to hang onto and a bit of it smooth as obsidian that I could rub with my thumb – the perfect worry stone!

Then I helped set up Red Tent, and arranged to do the Incredible Vagina workshop even though I had missed the official workshop submission deadline.  The Red Tent is awesome like that. 😀

I never miss Opening Ritual if I can help it, and I am SO glad I made this one.  I’d never seen or even read about Druid rituals before, and I have fallen head over heels for them!  I love the way they invite audience participation with chanting and clapping, Archdruid Kirk White’s awesome enthusiasm as he ran around the circle in his kilt, long silver curls whirling in his wake as he spun, danced, jumped, and banged his staff into the ground…lol

Poor Food Vendor Sean had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day – he spent 4 hours in cop car for a crime he had nothing to do with and didn’t even fit the description for, his full cart of groceries stolen while he sat there and watched, unable to help, so he had to buy them all over, and he lost hundreds of dollars because he wasn’t here vending.

But yay hot food!  Beth ordered a rib-eye steak tip sandwich, (bleh), and Sean’s lovely assistant, with her strong Latina accent, pronounced it “rabbi.”  Sean couldn’t help but tease her.  “Yeah, we caught some Rabbi’s jumping the fence, but the just weren’t fast enough, so there you go…Rabbi steak sandwich for you, then?”

And so it begins…lol
